Scrape off the former dirty compound and then employ saddle soap to clean and recondition the leather. Reapply the chemical compound of your choice...

I utilize a woods rasp to clean mine off. Probably don't need to but I notice that after I clean it it tends to polish better.

Please don't quote me on this as I can non recall where I heard/read this. Hell I may even be making it up completely and confused with something else.
Anyways, I swear someone once suggested that rubbing a big pinkish pencil eraser on it will remove compound.
Never tried it, wish I could source information technology. Only tossing it out at that place every bit it involves no solvents or other special cleaners.

The package on my Flexcut Knife Hone says: "If the strop becomes caked with compound use an edged tool (ex. scrap metallic or paint scraper) to clean away used chemical compound from the leather. This will enhance the grain of the leather and you can utilise fresh compound." I used the edge of a credit menu... information technology seemed to work. I'm pretty new at this so....
